The three car transport control cars of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway have been at the heart of car transport through the Furka Tunnel for almost 45 years. Day after day, they ensure that passengers and their vehicles pass safely through the mountain. Thanks to the recent refurbishment, they should remain in reliable service for another 20 years or so.
The modernisation includes the renewal of control technology, safety and control systems in control cars and locomotives to meet current technical requirements. As the general contractor, Enotrac relied on proven, railway-compatible components with high availability, including relays and contactors from ComatReleco.
In addition to a structural overhaul, the control cars were equipped with new control technology, an adapted driver's cab and modern monitoring and power supply components.
Two of the three control cars have already been modernised and are in operation, with the third to follow. With the completion of the work, the long-term operational capability and availability of the vehicles is assured for the next two decades.
